LAGOS, Nigeria
At least eight people were killed and dozens of others were injured in suspected twin suicide attacks at a displaced persons’ camp in northern Nigeria’s Banki town Thursday morning, according to multiple unofficial sources and local media in the restive region.
Ahmed Sajo, member of a local vigilante group, told Anadolu Agency by phone that the suspected suicide attack was carried out by young girls.
“The attacks were by two teenage girls who had apparently sneaked into the Banki IDP [Internally Displaced Peoples] camp. Six others died along with the bombers,” Sajo said.
He said at least 25 other people were injured, who were being treated at a makeshift hospital in the town liberated from Boko Haram early 2015.
An aid worker, who asked not to be named because he feared for his safety, also confirmed the blasts.
“So far, we have eight corpses,” he said.
Local newspapers also quoted multiple sources to confirm the blasts.
On Feb. 10, 58 people were killed and 78 others were injured in multiple suicide attacks at an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Borno state’s Dikwa town.
The latest suicide attack came four days after militants ambushed troops in Kareto area of the state, which reportedly killed dozens on both sides.
