SHARQIYA (AA) – At least 20 soldiers were injured in an attack on army vehicles in ousted president Mohamed Morsi's hometown in the Nile Delta Sharqiya province.
A security source said gunmen driving a 4x4 truck had attacked three police trucks as they drove from Abu Kebir city to Zagazig city.
The attackers reportedly fled the scene unscathed.
As of the filing of this report, there was no comment on the incident by the authorities.
Egypt has been in a state of turmoil since security forces on Wednesday violently dispersed two major protest camps set up by Morsi supporters in Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya Square and Giza's Nahda Square.
The Health Ministry has said that at least 638 people were killed in nationwide violence on Wednesday, including 288 in Rabaa al-Adawiya and 87 in Nahda Square.
However, the official death toll remains far below figures given by the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, a coalition of pro-Morsi Islamist parties and groups, which has put the number of deaths from the Rabaa sit-in alone at some 2,600.
On the other hand, gunmen attacked a military facility in the northern Egyptian city of Marsa Matrouh on Friday.
Eyewitnesses said gunmen hurled two bombs at the city's Military Prosecution headquarters before fleeing the scene.
