JERUSALEM
Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian who was reportedly engaged in a stabbing attack in the occupied West Bank on Sunday, according to the Israeli army.
"Palestinian assailants stab Israeli civilian at gas station. Forces respond w/ fire, hit confirmed. Civilian receiving treatment," said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on their official Twitter account.
The IDF statement noted that an investigation was launched into the incident that occurred near Ramallah city.
It further argued that the killed Palestinian was not alone in the attack, adding that "IDF troops are still searching for other suspects escaping the crime scene".
The stabbed Israeli who was slightly injured was hospitalized, said the statement.
Tension has escalated since 18-month-old Palestinian infant Ali Saeed Dawabsheh was burned to death on July 31 in an arson attack by Jewish extremists on a village near the southern West Bank city of Nablus, according to Palestinian medical sources.
His father Saad Dawabsheh also died on Saturday of injuries he sustained in the incident.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sharply condemned the arson attack.
