BEIJING
Nineteen workers were killed Friday night in a landslide at a highway construction site in Yan'an City, northwest China's Shaanxi province, the Xinhua state news agency reported.
Nine were pronounced dead at the scene after eight makeshift dormitories were destroyed by the landslide at 21.12 local time (16.12 Turkish time). A further ten died in hospital and two are still being treated, Xinhua added.
The workers belonged to the China Railway No. 3 Group, which is expanding the highway between Huangling City and Yan'an City.
Local authorities have carried out a survey of the immediate area to guard against further disasters, the agency said.
Mountainous Yan'an is prone to landslides where deforested slopes increase the risk of soil movement.
