ISLAMABAD
Eleven militants have been killed and a senior Al-Qaeda leader captured in attacks in North Waziristan, according to the Pakistan Army.
Six militant hideouts were destroyed in air strikes in different parts of the region, army mouthpiece The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Saturday.
It claimed that a senior al-Qaeda leader was arrested by security forces in Miramshah - the administrative headquarters of North Waziristan - while trying to flee, but declined to name him.
The army launched a full-scale operation in North Waziristan on 15 June to eliminate Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a consortium of different insurgent groups in Pakistan, after peace talks between the two sides collapsed in April following an end to a 40-day long ceasefire.
About 340 militants and 12 soldiers have been killed in air strikes and clashes between the two sides since 15 June.
About 500,000 out of a total of 800,000 people in North Waziristan have already moved to other parts of the country including neighboring Afghanistan, according to the FATA (federally administered tribal areas) disaster management authority.
The authority expects that the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) could reach at 600,000 over the coming days.
