Scientists at Queen’s University in the Northern Ireland have developed the first perfume that smells better the more a person sweats, the university announced on Wednesday.
Researchers at Queen's University, in Belfast, made the announcement on the university's webpage. The scientists said that the "new perfume releases more aromas when it comes into contact with moisture." This makes the sweat odor vanish and thus one smells "nicer."
The discovery was made at the Queen’s University Ionic Liquid Laboratories (QUILL). According to the scientists, "the innovative perfume system was created by tagging a raw fragrance onto an ionic liquid (salt in the form of liquid) which has no smell."
"The perfume system also has the ability to remove the bad odors that come from sweat," said the statement. "The 'thiol’ compounds that are responsible for the malodor of sweat are attracted to the ionic liquid, attaching themselves to it and losing their potency."
According to the project leader, Dr Nimal Gunaratne from QUILL research center, the discovery is an "exciting breakthrough… not only does it have great commercial potential, it could also be used in other area of science."
