WASHINGTON
The U.S. carried out a new wave of airstrikes against extremists in Iraq as President Barack Obama met with top aides to discuss the ongoing operations.
U.S. Central Command announced that five airstrikes hit Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, targets Monday and Tuesday.
Two airstrikes northwest of Erbil destroyed an ISIL truck and a fighting position, while three strikes southwest of Baghdad damaged another ISIL truck, and destroyed an anti-aircraft artillery weapon, a ground unit and two small boats on the Euphrates River.
The U.S. military has conducted 167 airstrikes since operations began in early August.
Obama met Tuesday with top aides at the White House to discuss U.S.-led efforts to combat ISIL.
During his meeting with Gen. John Allen, the special presidential envoy leading the coalition effort against ISIL, and Ambassador Brett McGurk, deputy special presidential envoy, “The President underscored the importance of maximizing coordination with allies and partners to build a strong coalition with broad international participation,” according to the White House.
