Nigerian authorities are trying to track down militants who recently abducted a female American Christian missionary in Nigeria's central Kogi State.
"We are making an effort to trace the criminal gang and free her," police spokesman Sola Adebayo told The Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.
He said the abduction had been carried out by "hooded gunmen who scaled the fence of the compound where she was staying and took her away on Monday."
The woman, identified as Phyllis Sortor, was reportedly abducted from the Hope Academy compound in Emiworo.
An official at the U.S. Consulate-General in Lagos said the mission was aware of media reports that a U.S. citizen had gone missing in Nigeria.
"Due to privacy concerns, we have no further information to share," the official, requesting anonymity, told AA.
Kidnapping is common in many parts of Nigeria, with abductors often demanding hefty ransoms in return for their victims' release.
