ISLAMABAD
The Pakistani army has killed 30 suspected militants in alleged clashes and shelling in northwestern Pakistan’s Khyber Agency on Wednesday, a security official said.
Four militant hideouts in the tribal region’s Tirah Valley were also destroyed, the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added.
The Pakistani army has launched large-scale military operations in Khyber Agency last month and North Waziristan on June 15 to purge the tribal areas of various al Qaeda- and Taliban-affiliated sanctuaries.
Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been displaced because of the ongoing military campaign.
Although the army claims that more than 1,300 militants have been killed in the operations, there is no way to independently verify the provided figures. Over 100 Pakistani soldiers are also said to have been killed.
