BANGKOK
Northern areas of Thailand and Myanmar were shaken by a strong earthquake early evening Monday.
Anadolu Agency correspondents in the region said the quakes caused some material damage, such as cracking roads and buildings, but around an hour after it hit no casualties had been reported.
Pictures on Twitter showed images of collapsed roads, goods shaken from supermarket shelves, and toppled Buddhist structures - all alleged to be caused by the quake.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake measured a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 and was centered 9 kilometers (6 miles) south of Mae Lao, in northern Thailand, and 27 kilometers (17 miles) southwest of Chiang Rai, also in the country's north.
The survey said it was located at a relatively shallow depth of 7.4 kilometers (4.6 miles).
The earthquake was also felt in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon and the Thai capital, Bangkok.
