SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina
A Serbian army helicopter carrying a sick baby crashed near Surcin Airport near the capital Belgrade on Friday night.
Although the number and identities of the people in the helicopter have yet to be discovered, a total of seven people are believed to have been inside the aircraft, local media reported.
It was not immediately known if anyone survived the accident.
"Our helicopter, which was carrying a sick baby from Raska, crashed in the wider area of the airport Surcin," said the Ministry of Defense and the Army of Serbia on its official Twitter account.
The army helicopter began its rescue operation at about 21:00 local time (1930GMT) after a landslide cut off the medical corps that was transporting a sick baby from Novi Pazar. The helicopter flew back to Belgrade after picking up the baby. The other six people in the aircraft were the four crewmembers, a medical technician and an anesthetist.
According to the Serbian Ministry of Defense, the accident took place during landing in Belgrade. Due to bad weather conditions the helicopter was forced to circle near the airport in the air in order to find a suitable place to land. Local reports assumed that the aircraft ran out of fuel.
