PRIJEDOR, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Serbian basketball fans have broken the windows of a mosque in Prijedor in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina as they chanted slogans against Bosnians shortly after the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup final held in Madrid.
Stones were hurled through two windows of the Carsija Mosque in the city center after a group marched on the building shortly after the United States' beat Serbia in the match on Sunday night.
Prijedor Public Security Center spokesman Mariya Matic told Anadolu Agency: "The attack was held right after Serbia lost the match 129-92 to the United States."
"After the game, a group of fans gathered at the square in the city center, a person separated from the group, approached the mosque, and broke two windows."
He said Prijedor Public Security Centre teams had launched an investigation and the person behind the attack would be identified and taken into custody.
Prijedor was the site of numerous war crimes carried out against Bosniak civilians by the Serb political and military leadership during the 1992-95 Bosnian war.
About 5,200 Bosniaks and Croats were killed or disappeared during what became known as the Prijedor Genocide.
It was the second-largest massacre committed during the war after the Srebrenica Genocide, according to the Research and Documentation Center (IDC).
The city is known for its Catholic, Orthodox Christian and Islamic heritage.
