WASHINGTON
The U.S. embassy in Yemen “remains open” but routine services are not available to the public, the State Department said Monday.
Despite public consular services being closed, the U.S. is “still providing emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Yemen.” said department spokswoman Jen Psaki.
“We're continuously analyzing the security conditions, and will remain -- we'll resume regular consular operations as soon as possible,” she said.
The embassy has operated on a reduced staff since September. Houthis rebels now control Yemen’s capital of Sanaa and last week forced the resignation of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the collapse of his government.
Yemen has remained in a state of turmoil since a popular uprising in 2011 ended the rule of longstanding President Ali Abdullah Saleh one year later.
Last week, deadly clashes erupted between presidential guard units and Houthi militants outside the presidential palace in Sanaa, further aggravating the situation in the already-tense capital.
