German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will travel to Israel and the Palestinian territories early next week, ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer announced on Friday.
“Peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians are in a significant phase,” Fischer noted. “In this context, the visit would be a signal of encouragement and support for this process.”
Steinmeier will travel to Tel Aviv on Sunday night from Paris, where he will take part in the Friends of Syria “Core Group” meeting.
On Monday, German Foreign Minister is set to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres and his counterpart Avigdor Liberman.
Steinmeier is also expected to meet Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, Israel's chief peace negotiator in peace talks, as well as the opposition leader, chairman of the Labor Party Isaac Herzog.
Following his talks in Tel Aviv, German Foreign Minister Steinmeier will head to Ramallah and meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
