TUNIS
Scores of Tunisians protested outside Tunisia's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday to demand the resumption of diplomatic relations with Syria and the return of the Syrian ambassador to Tunis.
Demonstrators waved the flags of Tunisia, Syria and Lebanese group Hezbollah and chanted slogans calling for the return of the Tunisian ambassador to Syria.
The protest came in response to calls on Facebook for stronger ties among Arab countries.
In February 2012, Tunisia declared Syria's ambassador "persona non grata" to protest what it described as "escalations" by the Damascus regime against Syrian civilians.
Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki had said at the time that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should step down in orderto resolve the bloody crisis.
He had also said that Tunisia no longer recognized the legitimacy of the Assad regime.
Syria has been in the throes of conflict since 2011, when a peaceful uprising against Assad escalated into a civil war following a violent government crackdown.
According to the UN, more than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict so far.
