JUBA
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Ethiopian Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom on Monday arrived in Juba for mediation talks aimed at ending South Sudan's political crisis.
The visit aims to implement the outcome of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) summit that was held Friday in Nairobi, a well-informed source told Anadolu Agency.
Bloc leaders had called on South Sudan's clashing factions to meet for peace talks until Tuesday, warning that they would be forced to take further action if talks did not happen.
The summit had issued a 19-point decision, including a call for an immediate end of hostilities and for peace talks to be held within four days.
The IGAD statement also warned that further unspecified measures would be considered if hostilities did not cease within the specified period.
South Sudan has been shaken by violence since mid-December, when President Salva Kiir accused former vice-president Riek Machar of standing behind a failed coup attempt.
A subsequent government crackdown landed many of Machar's supporters in jail, but the former VP managed to flee to South Sudan's Jonglei State, a stronghold of his Nuer tribe.
Although Machar had earlier denied involvement in the alleged coup, his forces have reportedly since captured parts of the country's Jonglei and Unity states.
