The historical Ummayad Mosque and the historical market place around it in the Syrian town of Aleppo are facing ruin.
A team of Anadolu Agency entered the historical Ummayad Mosque in Aleppo, which was seized by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) after four months long clashes, as troops loyal to Assad sieged the mosque and used heavy weapons to reclaim the complex.
The historical Ummayad mosque and the historical market place around could deteriorate beyond rescue if the fierce fight between Syrian army and FSA continues.
The mosque has a strategic importance for the FSA and the Assad forces. The mosque is located in the middle of the road which leads to the castle where the Assad troops were sieged now.
Many places of the mosque were burned and after the FSA captured the mosque, Assad forces attacked with cannons and destroyed most of the domes.
Abu Karim, member of a group, connected to the FSA showed evidence that Assad forces who did immoral things in the mosque and added, "The house of Allah should not be in the hands of the regime. It is a victory to capture the mosque with its strategic importance."
