LEFKOSA, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs has said talks between leaders of Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots have ended positively.
Victoria Nuland said in a statement Wednesday that she is confident that Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Dervis Eroglu and the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration Nikos Anastasiadis, want to make real progress in talks aimed at reunifying the island.
The TRNC was established in 1983 after several failed attempts to reunify the island with the Greek Cypriots.
Cyprus has been partitioned since 1974 when a military coup that attempted to unify the island with Greece was followed by a Turkish military intervention.
Peace talks between the Greek Cypriot administration and the TRNC continue under a United Nations initiative.
Nuland added Wednesday that the U.S. fully supports both sides' efforts.
