Chilean authorities declared a yellow alert for the Santiago Metropolitan Region on Tuesday due to intense rainfall, flooding and the activation of ravines, according to the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (SENAPRED).
Under a yellow alert, authorities progressively deploy additional resources as needed to prevent an emergency from escalating and reduce risks to people, property and the environment.
The alert was issued after heavy rain affected several municipalities across the region, with authorities reporting flooded streets and underpasses, a landslide in Melipilla, a municipality southwest of Santiago, and activated ravines in San Jose de Maipo, a municipality southeast of the capital, according to Chilean local media outlet BioBioChile.
Emergency teams have been deployed at several locations to respond to incidents and monitor the development of the weather event, SENAPRED said.
The alert will remain in effect until weather conditions no longer warrant the measure, according to the agency.
Chile's Meteorological Directorate has issued warnings for moderate to heavy rainfall in the coastal mountain range, valley and foothill areas of the Santiago Metropolitan Region.
The agency is also forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by hail and strong local wind gusts across the coastal mountain range, valley, foothills and mountain areas.
The National Geology and Mining Service, known as SERNAGEOMIN, has warned of a high probability of debris flows and landslides in the coastal mountain range, valley and foothill areas.
The risk of such events is considered lower in the higher mountain range, according to the geological assessment.
Based on the meteorological and geological information, SENAPRED canceled an earlier Preventive Early Warning for the region and raised the alert level to Yellow in coordination with the Metropolitan Regional Presidential Delegation.
Under the yellow alert, authorities will progressively deploy the resources needed to respond to the weather event according to its development.
The measure is intended to prevent the situation from increasing in scope or severity and reduce its potential impact on people, property and the environment, SENAPRED said.
Authorities have urged residents to remain attentive to official information and follow instructions from emergency services as rainfall and associated risks continue to be monitored.
