Trumpet virtuoso Ibrahim Maalouf to play in Istanbul
Ibrahim Maalouf, the French-Lebanese trumpet player and composer, is to meet fans at Istanbul’s Volkswagen Arena on April 23.
The 35-year-old will visit Istanbul as part of his Red & Black Light album tour. Maalouf is known for his virtuoso of the quarter-tone trumpet, a style of playing created by his father Nassim Maalouf. The style allows the player to work with traditional Arabic melodies as well as modern music.
Maalouf’s album “conveys reflections of the women in Maalouf’s life on his music,” organizer Pozitif Live said in an statement.
Maalouf, who has worked with Elvis Costello, Sylvia Schwartz and Sting, started his career with a rendition of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 at the age of 15.
His first album Diasporas was released in 2007.

Turkish drama to hit theaters
Turkey’s critically award-winning director Zeki Demirkubuz’s 11th feature Kor (Ember) comes out in Turkish cinemas Friday.
The Istanbul-based story focuses on a garment worker striving to pay for her child’s surgery after her husband is arrested in Romania.
“It is people’s rationality and irrationality, morals and desires, reasons and randomness that make us human,” Demirkubuz said in a statement on his official website. “These are the roots of human being’s goodness and malice. However, the deepest pain a person suffers is hidden in his nature, which is impossible to grasp.”
The film was inspired by Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu’s 1948 film A Hen in the Wind.
