The initial results revealed Sunday that the municipal elections and elections to one-third of the seats in the Czech Senate can be seen as a success for the two opposition parties Christian Democrats and the Mayors and Independents, according to Radio Prague.
Political scientists reportedly told the Czech News Agency that the results could be considered an achievement for the two parties, underlining that the Christian Democrats' was largely due to the first-round victory of party leader Jan Grolich in the Senate.
The Civic Democrats, the largest opposition party in the lower house, performed poorly.
The three parties in the governing coalition – ANO, Freedom and Direct Democracy, and the Motorists – also had reasons to be disappointed. However, ANO leader Andrej Babis reportedly said the results showed that his party remained the strongest political force in the country.
Five candidates secured more than 50% of the vote in Saturday’s Czech Senate elections, winning their seats in the upper house without the need for a runoff next weekend.
They include Grolich of the Christian Democrats, Jan Grulich of TOP 09, Jan Sobotka of the Mayors and Independents, Tomas Fiala of Our Czechia, and Zbynek Linhart of the Mayors and Independents, who won by a wide margin.
Among candidates advancing to the second round of voting for one-third of the Senate’s 81 seats, the Mayors and Independents and ANO each secured 13 places, while the Civic Democrats won nine, with around 90% of votes counted.
Christian Democrats wins most seats in municipal elections
Christian Democrats were the most successful party in municipal elections with nearly 2,000 councillors elected. It was followed by the Mayors and Independents, government leaders ANO and the Civic Democrats, according to Radio Prague.
Turnout at national level was reported to stand at 47%.
In the capital Prague, the Mayors and Independents came first with 23% of the vote. They came just ahead of Together for Prague, an alliance of the Civic Democrats and TOP 09, that secured 22%.
Prague Together came in third with 18%, while ANO came fourth in the capital with 14%.
Petr Hlavacek, the electoral leader of the Mayors and Independents in Prague, ruled out forming a city government with ANO, saying his party would hold talks with Together for Prague, Prague Together and the Pirates in the coming days.
ANO came first in six of 13 regional capitals.
The outcome of the municipal elections is expected to become clearer once local governing coalitions are formed, while the final composition of the Senate will be determined after next weekend's runoff elections.
Nearly 190,000 candidates competed for around 62,000 seats on local councils, while 154 candidates contested 27 seats in the upper house of parliament.
