At least 20 Yemeni soldiers were killed Monday in an attack by Al-Qaeda militants in Mukalla city in the southern province of Hadhramaut, a security official said.
"Al-Qaeda gunmen attacked a security checkpoint in eastern Mukalla in Hadhramaut, killing 14 Special Forces soldiers," Hadhramaut security chief Fahmi Mahrous told Anadolu Agency.
It is still unclear whether the gunmen had sustained any losses in the attack, he said.
Al-Qaeda has not assumed responsibility for the attack.
The group is active in several parts of southern Yemen, from which it continues to stage sporadic attacks on military and police targets.
Yemen has struggled to maintain law and order since the ouster of autocrat Ali Abdullah Saleh in 2012.
