ALEXANDRIA
By Ahmed Selim
A pro-democracy group has staged several rallies in the coastal city of Alexandria in protest at harsh jail terms meted out to 14 female supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.
An Alexandria court has jailed 14 girls – all members of pro-Morsi "7Elsob" (7morning) group – to 11 years in prison for "illegal assembly and joining a banned group."
Many of the jailed girls are students at the Alexandria University
Amid chants against the army and police, protesters staged rallies in the city to protest the harsh prison sentences.
Waving banners bearing the images of the jailed girls, demonstrators called for the release of the imprisoned protesters.
Pro-democracy students demonstrated in Alexandria University against the jail terms.
A study strike has also been announced by students at the university's Engineering and Arts faculties in protest at the jail terms.
On Thursday, the university's student union has tendered resignation in protest at the girls' prison terms.
