Shelton knocks out Alcaraz in latest finish in US Open history

Ben Shelton defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in five sets to reach the US Open semifinals in the latest-finishing match in tournament history.

The eighth seed beat Alcaraz 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) in 4 hours and 28 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match ended at 3:33 a.m. local time (0733 GMT), setting a record for the latest finish in US Open history.

Shelton will face fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals.

Tiafoe produced a remarkable comeback against compatriot Alex Michelsen in the day’s other men's quarterfinal, recovering from two sets down to win 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6) after 4 hours and 39 minutes.

Michelsen served for the match in the third set before Tiafoe fought back to reach his third US Open semifinal.

In the women's draw, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka survived a stern test from Czech Linda Noskova, winning 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, 7-6 (10-7).

American Jessica Pegula also came from behind to beat compatriot Emma Navarro 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, setting up a semifinal against Sabalenka.

The remaining men's and women's quarterfinals will be played on Wednesday.

In the women's singles, China's Zheng Qinwen will face Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, while American Coco Gauff takes on Mirra Andreeva.

The men's draw will see Russia's Karen Khachanov face Belgium's Alexander Blockx, while top seed Alexander Zverev of Germany meets Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp.
