ANKARA
The Turkish press office asked all the international news corporations on Tuesday to come into action to end the violence against journalists and anti-democratic actions in Egypt.
Violence against Turkish journalists by Egyptian security forces and some extreme groups called "baltaci" (axemen) have surged recent days, according to a written statement relased by General Directorate of Press and Information.
The statement said, "After SKY TV Cameraman Mikael Deane and Gulf News reporter Habiba Abdelaziz were killed, the world have followed the detention of 10 journalists along with TRT reporter Metin Turan who was stuck in Al-Fatah Mosque and Anadolu Agency reporter Hiba Zekeriya with deep concern. Concerns in Turkey are also increasing because TRT reporter Metin Turan is still being held without any statement."
The statement also said "We asked for an end to maltreating, violence and attacks against journalists immediatelly and call on all the media institutions especially international media corporations to come into action to end the violence against journalists and anti-democratic actions."
European Security and Cooperation Group, Reporters Without Borders, Organization of Islamic Cooperation and European Journalism Centre are among the bodies that the press office urged to take action to release TRT reporter Metin Turan and to end the violence against journalists.
