BEIJING
The number of public officials in Chinato be disciplined for violating strict austere working practice rules has risen to over 100,000 since late 2012, after 5,340 officials were reprimanded in December alone.
State Agency Xinhua reported Monday that as of the end of 2014, a total of 102,168 officials had been dealt with for breaches of "eight-point" rules introduced in 2012 to reduce pomp, ceremony, bureaucracy and other "undesirable work practices."
The Communist Party of China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said in its monthly report that the officials had been involved in 4,238 violation cases.
Xinhua said that violations included excessive spending on receptions and vehicles; extravagant weddings and funerals; and sending or accepting gifts, disobeying workplace rules; overseas travel and personal entertainment financed by public funds; negligence and lazy work practices.
The Dec. 4, 2012 legislation had ordered officials to minimize meetings, cut spending and adhere to strict vehicle and housing standards.
