NEW YORK
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said Thursday that four cancer spots had been found on his brain and that he would undergo radiation treatment.
In his first public remarks since his cancer diagnosis, Carter said the illness was first discovered as a tumor on his liver.
He said the tumor had been successfully removed in an operation on Aug 3, but the cancer spread to his brain.
Four "very small" spots of melanoma were found on his brain, he said. He added that he was "surprisingly at ease" with the diagnosis.
Carter served as president from 1977 to 1981. He is 90 years old.
After leaving office, he embarked on a career of humanitarian advocacy and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
