Top Pakistani, Iranian diplomats discuss developments following recent US-Iran talks

Top Pakistani and Iranian diplomats met in New York to discuss the latest developments following recent talks between Washington and Tehran, an official statement said Thursday.

The meeting between Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi was held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, a statement from Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said.

It comes a day after US and Iranian negotiators held hours-long talks in New York to discuss ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and revive long-stalled direct talks under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

The two counterparts discussed bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and international developments.

Dar underscored the importance of dialogue, diplomacy and sustained engagement in promoting regional peace and stability.

Both sides agreed to remain in "close" contact, the statement concluded.

2-state solution

Dar also met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul to discuss regional developments, particularly the situation in Palestine.

Islamabad's top diplomat reaffirmed the importance of sustained international efforts toward a ceasefire, humanitarian assistance and a "just and lasting" solution based on the two-state solution.

Wadephul appreciated Pakistan’s role as a "reasonable" mediator in regional conflicts, especially in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, the German Foreign Ministry said in a post on the US social media company X.
