Global warming poses a threat to world peace, the Swiss president has warned.
In a speech to the annual UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Alain Berset said that global warming has gone from an body_abstract concept to an overwhelming reality which worsens inequality, risks stability, endangers food security and biodiversity, increases pollution, and leads to conflicts.
As such, a strong multilateralism is needed to deal with all the challenges the world faces, he added.
Turning to the war in Ukraine, Berset criticized Russia.
The 19-month-old war is also an attack on international law and multilateral institutions, he said.
He decried how the war was started by a member of the UN Security Council, whose primary responsibility is protecting global peace and security.
