ANKARA
Turkey condemned last Saturday's armed attack allegedly carried out by the Syrian regime forces against a UN aid convoy which arrived in the Homs region in Syria, according to a written statement by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued on Monday.
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarded the situation as 'not surprising' and said the regime had intensified its attacks targeting Homs by disregarding the ceasefire that was necessary for delivering humanitarian assistance safely to the civilian population. The statement condemned the regime and said that once again they had not fulfilled their commitment to the international community, particularly the UN, and their obligation in accordance with international law.
The ministry also said by perpetrating this attack, the regime had shown once again how far it stands from a political transition process and a peaceful solution.
"The shooting of aid convoys, the slaughtering of civilians with barrel bombs, the practice of ethnic cleansing have reaffirmed that the regime has no intention of giving up committing the most serious crimes against humanity and carrying out merciless persecution," the statement added.
The ministry urged the UN Security Council to take 'strong, compelling and resolute' steps to alleviate the suffering without delay in the humanitarian disaster in Syria.
On Saturday, a UN and Syrian Red Crescent aid convoy was attacked during a three-day-ceasfire in the beseiged city of Homs, both the regime and opposition groups are blaming each other for the attack.
